Microsoft and Apple are the two leading corporations in the rapidly growing electronic business. Apple Inc. was incorporated January 3, 1977, ('Apple Investor Relations Investor FAQ') one year after Microsoft was funded. In August 1981, Microsoft launched its first version of Windows version 1.0 sparking the competition between Microsoft and Apple. ('Introduction to Microsoft Windows') Microsoft is better than Apple because, people are more familiar with Microsoft Windows rather than Mac OS (Operating System) X. It is easier and cheaper to upgrade Microsoft's software and hardware rather than the Mac PC, and Microsoft's corporation also has much more to offer to the public than Apple Inc. It is true people are more familiar with Microsoft Windows rather than Apple's Mac OS X. After the release of Microsoft's Windows 3.0 in the 1990's, the Apple corporation fell, and more and more people started purchasing Microsoft's Windows, and forgetting that Apple even had an OS. ('1990-1995: Apple vs. Microsoft in the Enterprise.') While Apple only tried to sell their product to the upper class citizen and top businesses, Microsoft looked for ways to push their software out in any and every possible direction. ('1990-1995: Why the World Went Windows') Due to this renown, Microsoft has gained much business and publicity in both the corporate and public worlds. Today Microsoft Windows is everywhere, in almost every office, and in millions of homes around the world. Also, schools across the United States are running Microsoft Windows on their computer hardware. Microsoft Windows? interface and many of their features greatly differ from that of Apple?s Mac OS X. Since both schoo l systems and most major businesses run Microsoft Windows, it benefits to run Microsoft Windows in your own home instead of Apple?s Mac Os X because it would be more difficult to operate something that one is not familiar with. Microsoft products have become some of the most affordable and efficient products in the computer industry. Microsoft?s official website offers free and easy installation of new upgrades and updates for your Microsoft software. Also Microsoft Windows offers a free built in firewall, and security against viruses and spyware. All parts for a Microsoft computer are upgradable and interchangeable as long as the required version of Windows is on the PC. Before Apple started using Microsoft software for the Mac PC (also known as the iMac), the only upgradable hardware for an iMac was the RAM (random access memory), therefore, the only option would be to buy an entirely new PC if something went wrong.

Technology has helped us in preventing fire incidents. Fire prevention is a proactive way of minimizing the damages or harm caused by a fire incident. It is the responsibility of fire departments which mostly have a Fire Prevention Officer as their head. The function of fire prevention is to spread awareness on how to take precautions against fire. Fire fighters, on the other hand, are assigned the task of extinguishing fires. Fire fighters are also dependant on technology to extinguish fire. All the equipments they use are the consequence on technology. To sum it up, technology has helped us in preventing fire as well as extinguishing it when need be. Technology has helped us enhance our fire safety measures. Fire safety comprises of the precautions we take to decrease the probability of a fire that may be fatal, injurious to people and hazardous to the property. This research paper would analyze how technology helps us prevent and extinguish fire. Modern technology has given us many types of equipment that have helped us prevent fire incidents. In most of the buildings today a fire retardant material is used during construction. There are also some electronic devices such as the smoke detectors. The biggest sign of fire is the smoke. Wherever there is fire, there is smoke. So the fire detectors help identify this symptom. These devices are also very affordable. Many building have smoke detectors in all rooms. It has become a necessary home security appliance. Smoke detectors are perfect for slow kindling fires but for combustible gas explosions modern technology has come up with the gas detectors. Smoke detectors are one of the most important fire safety devices. Natural gas and petroleum gas are the two most widely used gases in daily lives. Due to their harmful nature and properties, any gas leaks could result in dangerous explosions. Gas detectors are continuously monitoring the air and they immediately identify the change in surroundings if there is a gas leakage. They come with audible and visual alarm systems to alert people of the gas leakage. Hence, appropriate action can be taken in time to minimize the consequences. Gas detectors are a useful invention and should be positioned where gas leaks are most expected. Another example of technology that helps us in preventing fire is the fire alarm system. The fire alarm systems come in various varieties. They range from the simple manual alarms to the ones that give verbal warnings of any fire detection. A control panel, notification device, building safety interface and power supply make up a typical fire alarm system. The above mentioned gas and smoke detectors are the initiation devices that inform the alarm that a fire has been detected. Manual alarm system depends on people to detect fire and pull the manual alarm. Some of the other detectors used are the flame detectors and the heat detectors. The notification devices help in informing the people to evacuate the building because of the fire. Many of these devices send a direct signal to the closest fire department. Some of these devices are built to give verbal announcements, and also a visual display for the hearing impaired. The most modern of these devices that are installed in large buildings also provide evacuation instructions so that people evacuate the area in which fire was detected. There are various types of smoke alarms. They mostly fall in the categories of ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms. The former is better for fast flaming fire and the latter is more appropriate for the smoke fire. The combination of both these is the dual sensor smoke alarms (US Fire Administration, 2010). Wireless smoke alarms are one of the latest technological advancement as far as fire alarm systems are concerned. The wireless smoke alarm come in two different categories: Battery powered and Alternate Current powered. The battery powered smoke alarm is just like a normal fire alarm with no wire which saves the families the hassle of wiring and rewiring. The AC powered alarm systems is much more modern and aid in increasing the coverage of the alarm system. So, many smoke alarms can be replace by just a single AC powered alarm system A fire extinguisher, like the fire sprinkler system, is an active fire protection device rather a preventive one. It can not help in cases where there is a large out of control fire. However, it is most appropriate for fires that are limited to the ceilings of the buildings. There are two types of extinguishers: stored pressure and cartridge-operated. In the stored pressure fire extinguisher, the fire fighting agent and the expellant are stored in one chamber. Propellants are chosen keeping in mind the nature of the fire fighting agent. The nitrogen gas is used when the agent is any dry chemical extinguisher. Air is used when there the watery or foamy chemical extinguishers are present. On the other hand, in the cartridge operated extinguishers, the expellant gas and the fire fighting agent are in different chambers. The cartridge containing the expellant is punctured before the propellant and extinguishing agents are exposed to each other. The cartridge operated extinguisher is mostly used in industries where extinguishers have to be used time and again. The benefit these extinguishers give is the prompt recharge. The cartridge operated extinguishers use compressed carbon dioxide whereas the stored pressure extinguishers use nitrogen. Fire extinguishers can be further categorized into handheld and cart-mounted extinguishers. Cart-mounted extinguishers are also known as wheeled extinguishers. Handheld extinguishers are mostly used in homes or small workplaces or schools. The wheeled extinguishers are used in industrial sites, marines, airports, docks and heliports. They are much larger in size and bulky in weight. A fire sprinkler system comprises of a water supply that helps in extinguishing the fire. It is not a preventive tool but rather a cure. It supplies water with sufficient pressure just as the fire is detected. Initially expensive, it has become more affordable with the passage of time. Only a very few people have a fire sprinkler system installed at their homes. However most of them have smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are very important for the building’s safety. However, the best possible safety comes with the installation of fire sprinklers. They do not just help you detect fire but unlike the smoke detectors they help extinguishing it and saving lives. It is very popular in industries but still is not very much utilized in residences. Smoke detectors and sprinklers work best together. Smoke detectors identify the fire and set off the sprinklers. Sprinklers supply water with pressure and extinguish the fire. The only disadvantage of installing a fire sprinkler is that ones the fire has been extinguished people realize that all their belongings have been soaked in water. However this is a little price to pay if the sprinklers help save us our life (Smith, 2008). Technology has been a vital source of fire safety. Technology has always been a source of argument: some favor it, other oppose it. Where some people say that technology itself is the source of most fire incidents, others argue that technology has come up with equipments and devices such as various fire detectors and extinguishers. The contribution of technology in fire safety can not be ignored. To prevent fire, technology has given us smoke detectors, heat detectors, gas detectors, flame detectors and a variety of fire alarm systems. Cummings and Love Love is a concept that continues to fascinate, frighten, and inspire the world, which has resulted in countless films, visual art, and literature that is based solely around it. Every other song playing on the radio or movie that comes to theaters will more than likely contain love related themes. The universality of love is what makes it so addictive, be it romantic or platonic. Human desire and longing tends to be translated into the arts, resulting in some of the most beautiful works ever crafted, the theme being so widely understood. The difference in understanding the underlying cultural value between an outsider and an insider will vary from organization to organization and how often an employee interacts with an outsider. The Hofstede Centre (n.d.) defines culture as the â€Å"collective mental programming of the human mind which distinguishes one group of people from another.† Chipulu, Ojiako, Gardiner, Williams, Mota, Maguire, Shou, Stamai, and Marshall (2014), note that â€Å"culture can be at once tangible and observable; latent and unobservable; or even an abstraction altogether† (p. 367). Movie Summary Pretty Woman Essay The movie Pretty Woman is about a Hollywood prostitute named Vivian Ward that was hired by a wealthy businessman that goes by the name of Edward Lewis. Edward wanted Vivian Ward to be his escort for business purposes. Edward developed a relationship with Vivian over the week-long stay she had with him. Edward soon realizes from the beginning that he really likes this girl because he asks her to stay with him for a week and asks her to act as an escort for social events and is willing to pay $3,000 to Vivian and also give her access to his credit cards for her services. It is obvious that Edward gains feelings for Vivian and he falls in love with her. Edward also seems like he’s planning on building a relationship in between business events. Vivian at first doesnt treats Edward like any other guy and doesnt grow to like Edward until she notices that he actually cares for her and defends her. Their relationship continues when Edward takes Vivian to a polo match, where he’s interested in networking for his business deal and this is where the two also get hands on getting closer to each other. Another relationship forms at this event where Phillip Stuckey, who was Edwards attorney approaches Vivian. Phillip offers to hire Vivian once she’s finished with Edward, basically insulting her and treating her without respect. After this occurs Vivian is furious with Edward and she plans to leave for good, but Edward apologizes and persuades her to stay for the rest of the week. Their relationship grows as Edward is now showing how he cares for her by giving her a quarter of a million dollar diamond necklace to go with her outstanding dress and with surprise he tells Vivian that they were going to take a flight to San Francisco to see an Opera. The next day Vivian thinks Edward should take off of work and he takes her advice and does. They spend the whole day with each other and then make love. Just before she falls asleep Vivian admits to Edward that she’s in love with him. Toward the end of the movie we see that Phillip gets furious with his partner, Phillip makes his way to the hotel room to confront Edward and finds that Vivian is there. He starts shouting at her and begins to blame her for changing Edward and then smacks her across the face and tries to take advantage of her and rape her mainly because he knows that she is a prostitute. Edward arrives just in time and stops Phillip in the act of all this and then he punches Phillip in the face. Edward furiously orders him to leave the hotel room and then Edward gives aid to Vivian. He also showed her that he cares about her again and will come to her rescue as her knight in shining armor. Vivian’s self-esteem in this movie drastically changes as the movie goes on. In the scene where she is approached by Phillip, her body language changes to a depressing mood because she feels disrespected. Vivian also feels insulted when she enters the clothing store and is kicked out because they judge her by her attire and dont feel she can afford anything in the store. She is outraged with the idea that if she dresses a certain way she couldn’t get helped. From the beginning to the middle of the story she feels as if she is looked down upon and passed around thinking that she doesnt want to live her life out as a prostitute anymore. Vivian makes her money off of being a hooker and doesnt feel good about what she does. In the movie Vivian quotes â€Å"People put you down and start to believe it†. At the end of the movie with the scene when Phillip attempts to attack Vivian she defends herself because now she has a sense of pride and dignity and doesn’t allow men to use her anymore.
